Awards & Recognition

By celebrating outstanding instructors, we highlight the impactful mentorship, accessible teaching, and dedication that shape our students' futures.

Bart Cardon Teaching Awards

Given to CALES teaching faculty, the Bart Cardon Teaching Awards honor exceptional dedication, pedagogical innovation, and outstanding performance in the classroom.

The College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences (CALES) Bart Cardon Early Career Faculty Teaching Award was created to recognize and honor unusual dedication and outstanding performance by a member of the CALES teaching faculty who has been teaching 0 to 5 years at the University of Arizona. Recipients will be honored at the CALES Employee Appreciation and Awards Celebration, receiving a plaque and a check for $1,000. The award is open annually for nominations that may lead to the selection of one or more awardees, but awards may not be made in all years.

Who is eligible for the award?

Nominations are welcomed for any faculty member with a primary appointment in CALES (career-track or tenure track, regardless of degree or area of focus) who meets the following eligibility requirements:

  • The nominee must be a member of the teaching faculty in CALES who teaches formal courses, or who has done so until the semester in which the packet is submitted. (Formal courses need to include a hyperlink to the definition and examples)
  • The nominee must have taught formal courses for a maximum of five (5) consecutive years in CALES.
  • The nominee should demonstrate experience in counseling or advising, or mentoring either graduate or undergraduate students, individually or through involvement in clubs or other extracurricular activities.
  • The nominee should demonstrate a commitment to the scholarship of teaching and learning, along with active engagement in continuous professional development.
  • The nominee cannot have won this award previously.

What should be included in the nomination packet?

Nominations are open to any unit head, faculty, staff, student, or student organization within the College of Agriculture, Life, and Environmental Sciences. Each department/unit is welcome to submit multiple nominations. We also welcome and encourage self-nominations. We strongly encourage nominations and self-nominations for faculty on career- and tenure-track appointments across all areas of focus, regardless of degree, if they meet the eligibility requirements. Additionally, we value and support nominations of diverse teaching faculty and those engaged in a wide range of instructional activities. CALES is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and respectful community.

How do I submit a nomination packet?

Email completed nomination packets to cmazon@email.arizona.edu by the standard deadline for the relevant cycle. You will get a confirmation email that the packet has been received. Nominees who do not receive the award are encouraged to reapply in future application cycles.
