The College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences (CALES) is unique in our applied interdisciplinary approach to learning, so your student can customize their degree toward their specific interests. They can combine their skills in business with their passion for sustainability; or their love of animals with their talent for management. Whether it’s nutrition, technology, policy, education or farming, CALES offers the unique opportunity to pursue these interests, without limiting your student’s career possibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

While there are many campus-wide resources, we encourage your student to connect first with our CALES team to discover everything that’s available in the college, and university as a whole. Our CALES staff work together to develop a complete, holistic plan to help your student succeed on every level.

  • Academic support: Your student’s advisor will be their point of contact for all their questions about dates, deadlines, restrictions, registration and class schedules.
  • Health and wellness: If your student is struggling with mental, physical or emotional health, they can reach out to our Student Wellness staff for a private consultation.
  • Learning support: The CALES Learning Lab: Powered by the SALT Center offers one-on-one sessions to help students develop their learning tools and techniques; and to connect students with all other campus learning resources, like tutoring or workshops.
  • Career or internship: The CALES Career Center provides job-finding resources like networking and workshops, personalized professional development support, and “inside” intel about available jobs/internships.
  • Scholarship & financial aid: If your student needs help accessing the $1 million+ available in scholarships for CALES students, they can reach out to our scholarship administrator.
  • Student involvement: If your student is looking for ways to connect with others who share similar interests or goals, they can contact our Student Experience Manager to find a current list of available clubs, organizations and events.

Your student’s safety is the top priority for us, and the university offers a number of resources for students to ensure their safety. Visit the U of A safety website for a comprehensive list safety resources.

  • UAlert: Encourage your student to sign up to receive text/email notifications in the event of a campus emergency.
  • LiveSafe App: This app enables direct and discreet two-way communication with UAPD using text, picture, video, and audio. The LiveSafe app also lets users virtually walk their friends and family home with the SafeWalk feature. Download on Google or Apple.
  • SafeRide: SafeRide is a free transportation service and provides a nighttime alternative to walking alone on campus and in the Tucson community.
  • CALES Student Wellness: Our college provides students with free mental health resources to promote safe and healthy emotional and mental wellbeing.

CALES offers our students exclusive resources not found in other colleges. Our students have access to the Learning Lab – a one-of-a-kind academic resource for students, offering a personalized approach to academic improvement from major-specific resources to university opportunities, to tutoring, if necessary. The CALES Career Center and Student Wellness resources are available to help your student feel welcomed and supported through every stage of their academic career and job search.

The university map is a useful tool for locating buildings by name and type.

While every student is different, we believe it’s possible and beneficial for most students to develop extracurricular interests. This can help them build a supportive community and strengthen their mental wellbeing.

If your student is feeling overwhelmed by their schedule – which is a normal feeling! – encourage them to make an appointment with our Learning Lab Coaches, who can help them develop a schedule that works for them and their unique goals and interests.
