Levi's transforms the UofA campus into a denim dream following a fierce design contest
Fashion Industry's Science and Technology students competed in a design competition to have their work brought to life by the iconic Levi's brand. Levi's visited the university early in November and showcased the students' work.
Many aspiring designers in the Fashion Industry’s Science and Technology major had the opportunity to enter to win a Levi’s Patch design contest. The students were tasked with creating unique designs that represent the beauty and culture of the state of Arizona. The competition was fierce and Levi’s selected four lucky winners, Savannah Franco, Olivia Skinner, Mei Voyles, and Jennifer Villalba, who got to see their designs come to life.
The Levi’s airstream trailer came to the University of Arizona campus mall for students and Tucson locals alike to enjoy. The pop-up was held from 10am-5pm Tuesday through Wednesday, November 7-8th.
Individuals could play a game of Plinko to win a prize or bring their own Levi’s products to get customized at the event. Levi’s offered private fittings and customizations of the prizes consisting of bucket hats, trucker hats, shirts, fanny packs, and tote bags. Customers had their choice of University of Arizona themed vinyl designs to embellish on their products or the patches designed by the contest winners.
Mei Voyles, one of the contest winners said, “This is really cool, seeing my patch come to life.”
Savannah Franco designed two patches, an Arizona state patch and an alien. Olivia Skinner’s patch was inspired by murals in Tucson. Skinner created a skull wearing a cowboy hat.
“This has been a really great opportunity and I want to thank the FITS major for allowing us to work with Levi’s,” Skinner said.
Jennifer Villalba said that even though this contest is out of her comfort zone, with her friends' support and encouragement she decided to enter the contest by creating a cactus patch inspired by the nature surrounding her campus.
In addition to the pop-up shop, several marketing executives from Levi's were invited to speak at a networking panel hosted by the Terry J. Lundgren Center for Retailing. The executives were able to connect with fashion and Retailing and Consumer Science students alike and share their stories as well as relay their experience in the retail industry.
