This website functions as the virtual classroom for Animal Sciences 142. The course offers an overview of the history, personnel, terminology, equipment and breeds of animals utilized in the racing industry.
Our objective in this course is to introduce the students to the many components of the pari-mutuel racing industry. Included in this course will be an introduction to the breeds of animals used in pari-mutuel racing, racing organizations, racing and administrative officials, regulation and licensing, purse structures, track surfaces, medication issues, as well as other topics and issues affecting the racing industry today.
All types of racing and breeds of animals are discussed in this course. Generally, the thoroughbred perspective is discussed initially and then used as a reference point when comparing and contrasting other breeds and types of racing. The order of presentation does not indicate that the American quarter horse, standardbred or greyhound racing perspective is less important than the thoroughbred in this course.
