Arizona's Science, Engineering, and Math Scholars (ASEMS) program supports students in graduating with a STEM major. This program focuses on supporting students who are:
- the first in their family to attend college
- from low-income households
- who transferred from a community college
- who are from communities underrepresented in STEM
CALES ASEMS
CALES ASEMS is aimed specifically at STEM majors in the College of Agriculture, Life, and Environmental Sciences. Students follow a different timeline of services depending on whether they are entering as a first-year student or transferring from a community college.
In addition to being an incoming student for one of the eligible CALES majors listed below, you should also meet at least one of the following requirements:
- First generation college student (neither parent or guardian has completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree)
- Offered or awarded a Pell Grant
- From a group underrepresented in STEM
- Community college transfer student
- Agribusiness Economics & Management
- Agricultural Technology Management and Education
- Animal Sciences
- Applied Biotechnology
- Biosystems Analytics & Technology
- Biosystems Engineering
- Environmental & Water Resource Economics
- Environmental Sciences
- Microbiology
- Natural Resources
- Nutritional Sciences
- Plant Sciences
- Precision Nutrition and Wellness
- Sustainable Plant Systems
- Veterinary Science
First Semester (Fall)
- Be a part of a STEM Learning Community
- Take the Success in STEM 1-credit course led by peer educators
- Guidance and support related to study skills, time management, academic and career planning, and connecting with faculty
- Meetings with ASEMS Success Staff
- Participation in ASEMS Orientation and Inclusive Engagement Workshop
Second Semester (Spring)
- Research Readiness 1-credit course in the Fall led by professional staff and STEM faculty
- Opportunity to shadow in a research group or lab

1 on 1 meetings with ASEMS Success Specialist and Peer Mentors
Year 2 and beyond
- 1 on 1 meetings with ASEMS Success Specialist and Peer Mentors
- Opportunity to serve as a Peer Educator/Peer Mentor/Tutor
- Opportunity to participate in a paid summer research experience through the ASEMS STARS Program
Across all years
- Ongoing opportunities to connect and build community with faculty and other STEM transfer students
- Guidance and support in finding undergraduate research, professional/grad school and career preparation opportunities
- Individual support from professional staff
- Program workshops and events
- Access to free ASEMS tutoring services
- Be eligible to receive financial aid (stipends) on a case-by-case basis
First Semester (Fall)

- Opportunity to shadow in a research group or lab
