The November/December 2001 issue of the Arid Lands Newsletter, ALN No. 50, will focus on the theme of "The Deserts in Literature."
This theme, first explored in ALN No. 35 (1995), proved to be very popular with ALN readers. In ALN No. 35, the focus was primarily on literature written by Europeans and other "western" authors. In this issue, we would like to broaden this focus to include both written and oral literature of non-western societies and authors (with the constraint that, since ALN is published in English, all selected excerpts from such literatures must be available in English translation.) We are also interested in exploring a wide variety of genres: not just novels and short stories, but also poems, essays, diaries, letters, folk tales, myths, travel accounts, mysteries, and more...
Proposals for papers, comments, suggestions for possible authors, suggestions for resources (web, paper, CD-ROM etc.) to be included, etc. are welcome. Please send your suggestions to Katherine Waser, Editor, Arid Lands Newsletter.
