Contributions to Horticulture

Through our field evaluations of arid-land legumes and other research collaborations, DELEP has made many contributions to horticulture.

  • DELEP has worked closely with member nurseries from the Arizona Nursery Association to introduce new species of legumes to the landscape palette. At least 11 species have been introduced to horticulture through this effort.
  • DELEP was actively involved in collections development at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum and was instrumental in the creation of the Taylor Family Desert Legume Garden. The program produced over 2,000 plants for the BTA collections including many that were new to BTA's living collection.

  • DELEP has produced many trees for the UA Campus Arboretum including those new to the living collection.
  • In 2000, DELEP hosted Mr. Ian Oliver from the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden, Worchester, South Africa to look at arid land plants.
  • In 2007, DELEP hosted Mr. Michael Chamberland to collect herbarium voucher specimens of legumes growing in DELEP's evaluation fields for the U.S. National Arboretum Herbarium.
