There are over 19,500 legumes species around the world in nearly 770 genera.
Legumes were traditionally organized into three subfamilies (or separate families)
- Caesalpinioideae (caesalpinioids)
- Mimosoideae (mimosoids)
- Papilionoideae (papilionoids)
Recent studies of legume phylogeny, however, have resulted in Fabaceae being reorganized into six subfamilies.
- Cercidoideae
- Detarioideae
- Duparquetioideae
- Dialioideae
- Caesalpinioideae
- Papilionoideae
