Germplasm Conservation

Seed Banks

Seed banks preserve genomic diversity of domesticated species, their close relatives (crop wild relatives), and other species that may have valuable uses. As more areas of the earth's surface are devoted to human activities including agriculture, logging, mining, infrastructure, and urbanization, plant populations are negatively impacted. This places increasing numbers of species in danger of extinction. In situ and ex situ conservation are both vital to preserving wild plant species. Seed banks are an essential component in ex situ conservation. The DELEP seed bank focuses on preserving germplasm of wild species of Fabaceae.
