The May/June 2001 issue of the Arid Lands Newsletter, ALN No. 49, will focus on the theme of Linkages between Climate Change and Desertification.
These linkages potentially exist on many levels. On the level of policy, for example, what synergies, if any, currently exist between the UN Conference on Desertification and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change? Are these synergies being taken advantage of adequately? If not, what steps need to be taken in order to take advantage of them? On the level of science, what does current research tell us about, for example, effects of climate change on plant growth, or the ability of arid lands soils to act as a carbon sink? On the level of the human effects of climate change, case studies regarding specific communities are particularly welcome: what steps are being taken to promote community development while ameliorating activities that might contribute to desertification and/or climate change?
Proposals for papers, comments, suggestions for possible authors, suggestions for resources (web, paper, CD-ROM etc.) to be included, etc. are welcome. Please send your suggestions to Katherine Waser, Editor, Arid Lands Newsletter.
