The Spring/Summer 1999 issue of the Arid Lands Newsletter will focus on the theme of Water and Cities. This issue, Number 45, will be published in late spring 1999.
Around the world, cities are growing in population, areal extent, and water needs at precisely the same time that clean water is becoming a scarcer and more expensive commodity. This is a problem for cities everywhere but is particularly acute in arid regions. What are cities doing to cope? How are they managing such issues as wastewater reclamation and reuse, water harvesting, stormwater runoff and flood control? What new technologies are being developed, and what age-old technologies are being revived, to tackle these issues? What techniques are being developed for more holistic management of water in cities?
Proposals for papers, comments, suggestions for possible authors, suggestions for resources (web, paper, CD-ROM etc.) to be included, etc. are welcome. Please send your suggestions to Katherine Waser, Editor, Arid Lands Newsletter.
