The Frances McClelland Vision Award is given to honor a community leader who has made a lifelong commitment and significant contributions to the well-being of children, youth, and families. The community leader embodies the strength, dedication, vision and passion that Frances McClelland exhibited throughout her life. This award is for a community leader who has dedicated their life and work to helping Frances McClelland’s legacy and vision come to fruition for the people of Southern Arizona and the world.
Yazmin Almazan grew up in South Tucson and currently attends Pueblo High School. She loves science, in particular research and medicine. She is committed to using her scientific knowledge to help others recover from serious diseases and illnesses. Each year, Yazmin has taken a leadership role in setting up the Pueblo Science Night, an event in which hundreds of parents come to school to see their students' science experiments. Her passion this year is helping grow awareness of the dangers of Valley Fever in Arizona. She organized a survey for the Biotechnology program and participated in a public education campaign that was featured on the local news. Yazmin is a mentor through her Cross Age Peer Mentor position with the Lapan Foundation. She was recognized as the top STEM Student of Promise in 2018. She is the President of the Future Healthcare Leaders Club, as well as the Chemistry Club. Yazmin plans to study Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Arizona next fall. She aspires to become a Cardiothoracic surgeon and give back to her Tucson community as a healthcare professional.
