Sociology Brownbag - Andrea Romero

"Sociology Brownbag"
With Andrea Romero, UA Human Development & Family Science and Mexican American Studies
Friday, January 24th
12-1:15pm in Social Sciences, Room 415.

The U of A School of Sociology brownbag speaker for Friday, January 24th, 2014: Andrea Romero from the UA Human Development & Family Science and Mexican American Studies, “Preventing Adolescent Depression and Suicide Among Latinas.” 12-1:15pm in Social Sciences, Room 415.

Abstract:

Since the 1960s a higher rate of depression and suicide ideation has been documented for Latina girls, in comparison to other ethnic/gender groups . This presentation offers a concise summary of contemporary research on this critical topic, with inclusion of topics such as bullying, families, immigration, and culture.  Cutting-edge multiracial feminist theory will be discussed for interpretation and analysis in regard to existing theories on suicide.  Dr. Romero will also present recent research on adolescent suicidal behaviors based on analysis of the Arizona state-wide Youth Risk Behavior Survey.  Dr. Romero is an associate professor in Human Development and Family Science and Mexican American Studies.
