The Health, Emotions, and Relationships initiative for the Frances McClelland Institute for Children Youth and Families will be hosting the next International Association of Relationship Research (IARR) mini-conference in Tucson, Arizona on October 20-22nd 2011 at the University of Arizona. The confernece will be held at the Marriott University Park Hotel. The conference will focus on the intersections/boundaries of health psychology, affective science, and relationship research.

This presentation will examine the recent pop culture phenomenon of "girls kissing girls" under the (heterosexual) "male gaze." Whereas this context of same-sex sexuality has been theorized in feminist scholarship and overblown in various media outlets, it has not yet been systematically studied. Given the popular and scholarly discussions of this phenomenon, this context was of particular interest because of its possibilities for young women to express themselves as either/both sexual subjects or/and sexual objects. In this mixed methods interview-survey study, participants included 111 young college women of varying sexual and ethnic identities. In this presentation, I will share these women's stories in describing the proliferation of this recent phenomenon in popular peer culture, the extent to which young women recognize these spaces as objectifying, and their perceived ability for sexual agency in this context. I will also address the specific roles feminist and sexual identity played in these women's understandings of themselves as sexual subjects/objects as a part of this phenomenon. Dr. Arditti is a visiting scholar from Virgina Tech University and also the Editor-in-Chief of the scholarly journal, Family Relations. In addition to Family Relations, she also has served on the editorial boards for several other prominent social science journals including: Journal of Divorce and Remarriage, Marriage and Family Review, The Open Law Journal, International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, and Sex Roles.

Our goal is to develop the historical record of the diverse LGBT individuals and communities here in Arizona, capure memories of historical moments and movements; reveal our struggles, triumphs, and beliefs; as well as share our experiences and knowledges with future generations.
