Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Perennial
General Desc: Fiveneedled pricklyleaf refers to the leaves, which grow at closely spaced intervals at the base and along the stems; they are divided into about 5 narrow, needle-like lobes.
Identification notes: Woody taproot; densely branched; green or grayish-green stems; dense fine soft hairs; opposite leaves, crowded along stems; flower heads of 12 to 21 yellowish-orange ray flowers, 50 to 80 yellow disc flowers; slender stalks, bracts in 2 subequal series.
Height: To 10 inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Found on dry slopes and flats, especially on limestone soils.
Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 3500 - 5500 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow, yellowish-orange     Shape: Daisy or dandelion-like not in clusters     Tubular: N     Flowering Period: May - Aug
Description: Flower heads above leaves, on slender stalks to 4 inches long; 12 to 21 bracts; fine hairs on outer bracts; fused to inner bracts; inner bracts fused; 12 to 21 yellowish-orange ray florets; 1/16 to 1/4 inch long; 50 to 80 yellow disc florets.

Leaf Description: Leaves crowded along stems, leaf blades 1/16 to 1/8 inch long, divided along each side of stalk into 3 to 7 stiff, sharp, narrrow lobes, less than 1/16 inch wide, sparsely hairy, conspicuously dotted with glands.

Fruit Notes: Fruit narrow, 1/16 to 1/8 inch long, topped with of 10 irregularly toothed scales (pappus), also 1/16 to 1/8 inch long.
