Annual; leaves all basal, small, narrow, somewhat rigid; flowers on scape (leafless flower stalk rising from ground), 2 to 12 inches tall, cluster of greenish or brownish spikes, flowers in whorls or pairs, petals taper to a point, 3/4 to 2 inches long. Identification notes: Herbage hairy, long shaggy or silky hairs; leaves somewhat rigid, turning dark with drying, long and narrow; bracts below flowers, rounded, margins membranous, not exceeding the sepals; flowers in elongated clusters with male and female parts, white.
