Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Annual
General Desc: Slender, smooth, gray stems are usually branched from the base.
Identification notes: Very short ray flowers, little exceeding the involucre (bracts); principle bracts in 1 series; numerous flowers on an elongate stem; numerous lobed basal leaves distinguish this from other Malacothrix sp.
Height: 4 to 20 inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Sandy soils. Also found in dry, rocky limestone.
Plant Communities: Desert Scrub, Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Disturbed Areas
Elevation: 2500 - 6600 feet

Color: Pale yellow or whitish-yellow     Shape: Daisy or dandelion-like in elongated clusters     Tubular: N     Flowering Period: Mar - May
Description: Inflorescence is a loose array of flower heads.


Leaf and Stem Characteristics

Leaf Color: Green     Leaf Type: Simple     Leaf Shape: Pinnatifid     Leaf Margin: Lobed     Leaf Attachment: Basal and alternate     Leaves Clasp: N
Hairs: No     Spines: N
Leaf Description: Basal leaves are pinnatifid and lobed while the upper leaves are lance-shaped with toothed or serrated edges.


Fruit and Seed Characteristics

Fruit Color: Light brown   
Fruit Type: Achene
Fruit Notes: Has veins on the surface which extend to the tip.
