Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Annual or perennial
General Desc: Stems usually several, erect or ascending, slender; herbage hairy; flower clusters of mostly 1 to 3 flowers, the flowers nodding, borne on long stems, petals dark red to purple.
Identification notes: Glandular-somewhat hairy herbage; basal leaves of 7 or more leaflets, possibly many more; leaflets triangular, tips 3-lobed or 3-toothed, blades stemmed; petals yellow, dark red to purple in flat topped clusters of 1 to 3 stemmed flowers; stamens 5.
Height: To 2 feet


Habitat

Habitat Description: Rocky slopes, canyon bottoms, drainages, pinyon-juniper woodlands, ponderosa pine forests on gravelly volcanic or sandstone soil, often along seasonal stream courses.
Plant Communities: Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest, Riparian
Elevation: 6000 - 7500 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow, dark red to purple     Shape: Regular in round clusters     Tubular: N     Flowering Period: Jun - Aug
Description: Flowers small and numerous in open clusters on the branches; sepals hairy, pointed petals narrow to lance-like or narrowly oval with narrowest end at the base; stamens 5, filaments <1/8 inch long, anthers reddish-purple; styles 1 to 5, 1/8 inch long.
