Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native Life Cycle: Biennial or annual
General Desc: Lacey, multiple stemmed plant with leaves primarily at the base. Multiple bright yellow flowers top each stem.
Identification notes: Mid leaves divided into 3 to 7 linear or filament shaped lobes less than 2 mm wide. Flowers and sets seeds once (monocarpic). Leaves are somewhat hairy. In Arizona there are twelve different species of Hymenoxys.
Height: To 3 feet

Habitat

Habitat Description: Plant grows in dry, rocky areas, along roadsides, in open areas, and the edges of juniper-pine forests.
Plant Communities: Desert Scrub, Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest, Disturbed Areas
Elevation: 2000 - 8000 feet

Flower Characteristics

Color: Bright yellow Shape: Daisy or dandelion-like not in clusters Tubular: N Flowering Period: May - Sep
Description: There are numerous stalks of flowers which have straggly rays and orangish discs. The flowers grow to 1 inch wide and the stalks are up to 4 inches long.

Leaf Description: The leaves are narrow and pointed with two lateral lobes that form a trident shape. The foliage and stems are glandular and waxy, usually with a fine coat of light colored hairs.
