Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Perennial   Similar Species: Hymenopappus filifolius
General Desc: Erect and ascending; basal, woolly leaves are single, lanced-shaped to partly lobed; flower heads of 1 to 8 yellow disc flowers (no ray flowers) on top of long stems.
Identification notes: Leaves divided into 2 to 7 pairs of relatively broad lobes, densely matted woolly hairs, H. filifolius., has finely divided leaves; basal rosette of smooth margin leaves; somewhat large flower heads; hairs on seeds sometimes obscure scales on top.
Height: 8 to 24 inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Openings in pine, spruce, and aspen woodlands.
Plant Communities: Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest
Elevation: 5000 - 10000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Yellow     Shape: Daisy or dandelion-like in round clusters     Tubular: N     Flowering Period: Jun - Sep
Description: Open cluster of 2 to 8 flower heads; 20 to 40 yellow disc flowers; corollas and tubes 1/4 inch; bracts yellowish to whitish or red-tinged, 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, 1/8 inch wide.

Leaf Description: Stems and leaves covered with woolly tufts; 1 to several stems; leaves crowded at base; lance-shaped to partly lobed blades 2 to 5 inches long, 2 to 7 paired lobes; somewhat broad lobes, 1/16 to 1/4 inch wide; few stem leaves.


Fruit and Seed Characteristics

Fruit Type: Achene
Fruit Notes: 4-angled, 1/4 inch, hairless or sparsely minute, rigid hairs; covered with 12 to 20 scales less than 1/16 inch long.
