Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native Life Cycle: Perennial Similar Species: Heuchera parvifolia, Heuchera sanguinea, Heuchera eastwoodiae
General Desc: Has low, compact spreading mound of grape-like leaves on long multiple stems branching from a woody base. Erect flowering stalks with many flowers on short branches grow above the leaves.
Identification notes: Stamens exserted, filaments noticeably widened and flattened at the base; long leaf petioles are glandular-puberulent (have short, fine hairs).
Height: 1 foot

Habitat

Habitat Description: Found in dry rocky crevices and outcrops in the mountains.
Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest
Elevation: 4000 - 12000 feet

Flower Characteristics

Color: Pink to white Shape: Bell-shaped in elongated clusters Tubular: N Flowering Period: May - Aug
Description: About 1/4 inch in length. Flower bracts (sepals) are 5 and pinkish, petals are 5 and white to pink with green tips. Stamens visually extend beyond the sepals. Flowers appear on narrow short branched and short stalks.

Leaf Description: Scalloped leaves are from 4 to 10 inches in diameter. Rounded at the base and with 3 to 5 lobes. Lobes can be sharply toothed.

Fruit and Seed Characteristics

Fruit Color: Dark brown
Fruit Type: Capsule
Fruit Notes: Urn-shaped, about 1/4 inch in length and topped with 2 divergent beaks. Capsules split open between the beaks to release the seeds.
Seed Notes: Dark brown, spindle-shaped, less than 1/16 inch long.
