Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Shrub or small tree; bark light gray, rough, fissured; young twigs densely woolly (rarely without hairs), smooth reddish-brown beneath hairs, older twigs with few hairs, gray. Spring-deciduous.
Identification notes: Shrub or small tree to 20 feet tall. Leaf blades elliptic or oblong, spiny on margins, shallowly lobed, dull green above, densely hairy on lower surface, strongly net-veined on upper surface but not below.
Height: To 15 feet     Width: 12 feet


Habitat

Habitat Description: Found on arid slopes, often among chaparral and pinyon juniper woodlands.
Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 2500 - 8000 feet


Flowers

Color: Yellowish-green   Shape: Inconspicuous in elongated clusters    Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Mar - Jun
Description: Male and female flowers separate but on the same plant; males in drooping 1 inch long catkins, yellowish-green; female flowers solitary, with 3 styles in leaf axils.

Leaf Color: Dull green to grayish-green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or oval   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: Bottom of leaves
Description: Typically dull green, finely haired beneath, elliptical to oblong, thick, stiff, spiny at margins.


Fruit

Color: Brown   Type: Acorn or acorn-like   Description: Acorns up to 1 inch, solitary or several, elliptic, brown; with a scaly, shallow cup enclosing 1/4 to 1/3 of the nut; young acorns are yellowish-green.


Bark/Branches

Bark Color: Gray, black   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Gray, scaly and fissured. Twigs slender, reddish-brown with some fine fuzz when young. Sometimes blackened.
