Plant Description

Origin: Native
General Description: Evergreen. Broom-like shrub, up to 10 feet tall, freely branched.
Identification notes: Plants freely branched, broom-like; leaves sparse or absent at flowering; flower heads unisexual, borne singly on branch tips in crowded branched clusters; known by its broom-like growth form and large oval leaves which wither before flowering.
Height: 10 feet     Width: 4 to 6 feet


Habitat

Habitat Description: Found in gravelly or sandy streambeds, dry washes, and grasslands.
Plant Communities: Desert Scrub, Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Riparian
Elevation: 2200 - 6000 feet


Flowers

Color: White or pale yellow   Shape: Daisy or dandelion-like in elongated clusters    Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Jul - Oct
Description: Flowers are borne along ends of stems of lateral branches in crowded, short-branched clusters. Male and female on separate plants. Male flowers are pale yellow, 24 to 33 per flower head, female flowers are white, 15 to 30 per flower head.

Leaf Color: Green   Type: Simple   Shape: Round or oval   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Smooth leaves are 1 to 1-1/4 inches long with tapered bases. The margins are irregularly toothed.


Fruit

Color: Light brown   Type: Capsule   Description: Fruit is cylindric, less than 1/2 inch long, with 5 to 10 ribs.


Bark/Branches

Bark Color: Green   Bark Texture (Mature): Smooth   Bark and Branch Description: Stems are erect, green, smooth, and often leafless at flowering time.
