Plant Description Origin: Native Similar Species: Arctostaphylos pungens General Description: Evergreen. Spreading growth pattern forms dense thickets; smooth red bark with crooked twisted limbs. Beautiful peeling reddish-brown bark makes a striking contrast to the leathery evergreen foliage. Identification notes: An erect shrub with pink to white flowers and flower bracts, ovaries hairy. Twigs have dense short glandular hairs. Leaves are grayish-green, hairy. Leaf-tips more rounded and leaves feel more like sandpaper than A. pungens. Height: 6 feet Width: 10 feet Habitat Habitat Description: Found on dry, rocky hills, often in pinyon-juniper woodland and ponderosa pine forests. Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest Elevation: 3600 - 6800 feet Flowers Color: Pink to white Shape: Bell-shaped in round clusters Tubular: N Flowering Period: Apr - Jun Description: Nodding and urn-like to 1/4 inch long in clusters at the tips of branches. Leaves Leaf Color: Grayish-green Type: Simple Shape: Round or oval Margin: Smooth Attachment: Alternate Hairs: Top and bottom of leaves Description: Leaves are rounded, hairy and somewhat sandpapery. Fruit Color: Reddish-brown Type: Berry-like Description: Resembles a minature apple up to 1/4 inch in diameter.
