Forest cover is approximately 12% of the country's total area, of which 4% area is under protection. The Mendha forests study site (1) occurs in a contiguous forest tract with no protected areas, that is interspersed with villages and agricultural fields; the BR Hills study site (2) is a wildlife sanctuary.
