On the cover: Graphic design by Merrill Parsons, based on a photograph by Dennis Farris, depicting a batik loaned by Bob Hall of the Office of Arid Lands Studies. The batik was made in the early 1980s by an artist named K. B. Léopold. At that time, Mr. Léopold was an officer in the National Gendarmerie in Burkina Faso. He was also an art instructor at the national artisans workshop and training school in Ouagadougou. Mr. Leopold's work was widely appreciated by members of the international community and by his compatriots. One of his works graced the entry of the USAID offices in Ougadougou and he had other works commissioned and displayed by the US and other embassies and diplomatic offices. If any of our readers knows how to get in touch with Mr. Léopold currently, please convey our greetings to him-- and please forward his contact information to us.
