Protoporphyinogen oxidase (Protox) inhibitors - Protoporphyinogen oxidase (Protox) inhibitors - these herbicides inhibit the enzyme, protoporphyrinogen oxidase (protox) which is essential for the synthesis of chlorophyll. Susceptible plants accumulate toxic levels of protoporphyrinogen IX which reacts with oxygen and light to form singlet oxygen. Singlet oxygen causes rapid lipid peroxidation, membrane destruction, dessication and death. Symptoms include rapid development of "water soaked" appearance followed by dessication and necrosis.
