Dean George W. Smith welcomes incoming first-year students, transfer students and families

Dear CALES Students, Parents and Supporters,

Welcome to the University of Arizona and to the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences.

Like many of you, I am starting a new chapter this year. I am new to the university and to CALES, and I was drawn to this college because of its opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people and communities across Arizona and around the world.

You are becoming part of a story that began in Arizona more than 140 years ago. The University of Arizona’s first college was the College of Agriculture. From those beginnings, CALES has grown into a college with more than 20 academic majors and a remarkable breadth of expertise. Some of you will prepare for careers enabling you to improve crops or protect natural resources. Others will advance human health and well-being or gain new insights into consumer behavior. At the end of your academic journey, each of you will contribute something different, and your greatest opportunities may come from recognizing where your passion lies and learning how your work can make a difference.

College will expose you to new challenges and new opportunities inside and outside the classroom. It will also be a time to discover what you’re passionate about, find your sense of purpose, and begin shaping your future. We are here to help you do that and to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and experiences you need to pursue your goals. Your faculty, advisors and student support teams are here to assist you every step of the way as challenges arise. Please ask questions, seek help when you need it, and take advantage of opportunities to explore interests beyond your major.

Parents and supporters, you are part of this journey, too. Thank you for the encouragement and support that helped bring your student to CALES. We look forward to being your partners as your student grows, learns, and finds their place at the University of Arizona.

Students, you are now part of a legacy that stretches back to 1885. What you learn, discover, and contribute here will help shape your future -- and, together with the work of generations before you, the future of Arizona and our nation.
