The College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences and Arizona Cooperative Extension are partnering with the University of Arizona’s Beyond Juneteenth Committee to host the event Beyond Legacy: The Next Generation of Justice and Action in the 21st Century,” featuring speakers Dr. Bernice King and Professor Ilyasah Shabazz on June 19, 2023.

This event is part of UArizona’s first official observance of the Juneteenth holiday, which marks the day U.S. troops liberated enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. Since the era of Reconstruction, Black communities have celebrated the holiday with parades, festivals, and speaking events. In that spirit, “Beyond Legacy” will commemorate the history of emancipation and the continuing African American freedom struggle.

Dr. Bernice A. King is a global thought leader, orator, and peace advocate. The daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, she is CEO of the King Center, which was founded by her mother. Prof. Ilyasah Shabazz is a speaker, educator, and author. The daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz, she promotes higher education for at-risk youth, and she has written numerous books, like Growing Up X.

The free event featuring King and Shabazz will be held at Centennial Hall (1020 E University Blvd), 7:00-8:30 pm on June 19.

Seating is limited. A college student ID is required for special student seating.
