Research & Extension

The focus of my program (80% Extension, 10% Research, 10% Service) is (1) to collaboratively improve measurement of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) adoption, outcomes and impacts in Arizona and beyond; and (2) to communicate the importance and impacts of IPM on crop production, economy, and protection of human and environmental health. My research is focused on analysis of pesticide use data and other information to measure adoption and outcomes of integrated pest management (IPM) practices and programs by growers and other stakeholders. I have expertise in quantitative and qualitative research methods that permit in-depth analyses of user attitudes, behaviors, and practices.

My Cooperative Extension role includes teaching farmers, urban pest managers, pesticide applicators and others concepts of risk, including human health effects of pesticides and principles of risk communication. I work with audiences to evaluate perception and adoption of reduced-risk pest management practices and technologies in collaboration with UA faculty and collaborators from other institutions. As Associate Director of the Arizona Pet Management Center (APMC), I support statewide IPM programs and personnel, including grant development and evaluation of outcomes and impacts. In coordination with the Western IPM Center at UC Davis, I serve as IPM Network Coordinator for the Southwest states. This includes researching, writing and submitting scientific comments to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (and other agencies) related to IPM, resistance management, and pesticide registration issues.
