Postemergent Grass Control in Melons (Mar. 10, 2010)

Both sethoxydim ( Poast, Segment, others) and clethodim (Select Max, Select, Arrow, others) are registered on melons for postemergence grass control. They both control most annual grasses although only clethodim will control sprangletop (red and Mexican) . These herbicides are normally safe to all broadleaf plants although some injury to melons has occurred from Select Max where high rates have been applied. At normal use rates of 9 to 12 oz., little injury has been observed. In overlapped areas where a 2X rate is applied, injury in the form of distorted, discolored and stunted new growth can occur. The label allows for up to 16oz. although Valent, the registrant, recommends that no more than 12 oz. be applied.
