The last Vegetable IPM Advisory contained a chart for herbicide use in leaf lettuce
for California. California has very comprehensive pesticide reporting requirements
that require all applications, including private applications, be reported. This
week we have included a chart for herbicide use in leaf lettuce for Arizona. The
information for this chart was provided by Wayne Dixon from the Arizona Pest Management
Center Pesticide Use Database. It is based on 1080 Pesticide use reports for Arizona.
Arizona does not require that private applications be reported and these numbers
cannot be considered as complete. However, the trends that are illustrated closely
follow those for California. Pronamide use has dropped sharply since the registration
for leaf lettuce was cancelled. Bensulide use has increased significantly at the
same time while Benefin use increased slightly but remains the lesser of the 3 preemergent
herbicides used on leaf lettuce.
