Results of pheromone and sticky trap catches can be viewed
here. Corn earworm: Moth activity unusually high for this time of the year, particularly in Dome Valley, Wellton and Roll areas. Highest counts we’ve observed in the past 6 years at this time of the season. Beet armyworm: Moth activity is slowly decreasing as the fall weather begins to cool down consistent with activity in the field. Trap catches varied across locations with activity greatest in Dome Valley. Cabbage looper: Cabbage looper activity increase significantly over the past week, but overall is lower than counts recorded this time last fall. Whitefly: Adult movement has slowed significantly; captures on sticky traps are very low in all traps. Thrips: To date, thrips activity has been seasonably low at all trap locations. Aphids: We are beginning to pick up aphids in traps, particularly in the Gila and Yuma Valleys consistent with wind’s coming predominantly out of the W-NW in the past two weeks. Leafminers: Adult activity remains seasonably low in all locations, but increasing more so in fields where cotton was recently harvested. Diamondback moth: Diamondback moth (DBM) counts in pheromone traps have increased throughout the area over the past two weeks, particularly in the Gila Valley, North Yuma Valley and Bard/Winterhaven (See DBM Trap Network). Two trap locations in the N. Yuma Valley adjacent to a direct seeded broccoli and transplanted cauliflower field had > 6 moths / trap/ night over the past week. However, in most cases, DBM larvae are absent, or present in very low numbers in fields, and to date no PCAs have reported difficulty controlling DBM. On the Yuma Ag Center (YAC), we have very light DBM numbers.
