Osage Orange (August 5, 2015)

One of our subscribers traveling in the Carlsbad New Mexico area contacted the IPM TEAM asking us to identify this fruit he found. We think it is the Osage Orange Maclura pomifera, also called hedge apple, horse apple, monkey ball. The next obvious question was: can I eat it? Despite the name Osage Orange is not related to the orange. Only the seeds are edible.
Thanks for your questions and comments!
