Agriculture Course in Soil Science to be Offered

A modular course in Soils and Soil Fertility (SWES 406) will be offered in the Yuma area in the summer of 2002. This course consists of four, four-hour sessions held on consecutive Tuesdays, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the University of Arizona Yuma County Cooperative Extension Auditorium. The class is offered as a UA course in the SWES Department for one hour of credit. This course can be used to help in meeting the degree requirements for either undergraduate or graduate students working toward a master’s degree.  Agriculturists or other professionals seeking certification(s) may also want to enroll in these credit courses.

Course Objective:    Develop an understanding of the basic principles associated with soil science, soil fertility and soil management for crop production systems. Fundamental soil science and agronomic concepts and practices will be presented.

Course Instructors: Dr. Jim Walworth, Dr. Tom Thompson, Dr. Paul Brown, and Dr. Jeff Silvertooth (course coordinator).

Session 2      Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition Management
Session 3     Water Movement & Heat Flow in Soils
Session 4     Management of Irrigated Soils – Salinity and Sodium Management

Students enrolling in these courses must be officially admitted to the University of Arizona, and will enroll through the Extended University.  Enrollment can be completed the first day of class.  Enrollment begins at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, 18 June 2002 and the first class begins at 12 Noon on the designated dates for each session.

Prices for enrollment are ($126.00 per unit plus $6.00 AZ Trust Fee and $15.00 EU Registration Fee).  Class notes will be available at the class for a fee of $14.00 per copy.
